App of the Week- Speech Trainer 3D

12 10 2011

Speech Trainer 3D is a great app to use with students with articulation issues. The app is made by Smarty Ears . They also have a litany of apps for SLP’s.

Speech Trainer 3D comes with three options- side view, front view, and examples of words that contain the particular sound.  The user or the therapist would select the sound and tap the play button to listen to the sound.

In the side view, there is forward button. Tap this button to activate the tutorial on how to produce a particular sound. These tutorials go step -by- step and are quite helpful.

The controls are easy to use. However, the 3D animations can be a little disconcerting if using the app with younger children, in which case a nice substitution would be to use an app such as Artik Pix.

When I showed Speech Trainer 3D to one of our SLP’s as a potential tool to use in therapy, the feedback was extremely positive. Furthermore, the SLP was encouraged by this app to use it with a particular student in that moment.

A great feature is the use of the built-in camera on the iPad. Students can instantly see their articulation errors. The immediate visual and auditory feedback is an essential component for students that are struggling with articulation issues.

While I am not an SLP, I can easily see the benefits of an app such as Speech Trainer 3D. This is why it’s my app of the week!
